Therapist Short Bio

I help people to enjoy their everyday life more and learn how to make improvements to their mental health. We do this by beginning to understand why we are the way that we are. Once we understand them, our brains can always change. I am a counsellor because I know that it works and how it can transform lives. It's the power of being listened to, maybe for the first time in your life.

Therapist Long Bio

For some people, counselling is simply a safe space to discuss how you're feeling. Special time in your week, a moment to stop and care for yourself.Others may know that they are suffering with conditions like anxiety, panic attacks or depression. Some come to counselling because they are struggling to cope with something that's happened. These are all normal. Whatever you arrive carrying, we'll work together to improve your enjoyment of life.

I am a qualified Relational and Integrative Counsellor. This means that the unique relationship between counsellor and client is at the heart of my work. For you, this means I will take the time to get to know you, to hear you and understand you.I continually commit to my professional development through training and regular supervision.

As we learn more about your thoughts, behaviours and emotions in counselling, we'll see how they are all interconnected. We may look at the experiences and beliefs that have shaped your life. We may look at how your body and mind react to one another, as anyone who suffers from anxiety or depression will have noticed that these have physical effects as well as mental symptoms. My biggest hope is that when we reach the end of our counselling journey, you have learned how to make a vast improvement to your enjoyment of life.

The counselling journey is different for everyone but in terms of how it works week-to-week, I have a set process.

We begin with a free initial meeting over the phone. That allows us to meet and gives you an opportunity to decide whether you want to work with me.

For most people, we will start counselling the week after our initial phone meet.

What happens during counselling?

After our initial meeting, we'll set a regular time that works for both of us. You can choose to have counselling over the phone, on Zoom or in person at my consultation room in Headingley. Sessions last around 50 minutes.

In the first session we'll both agree our approach to counselling and our expectations - our commitment to one another.

The clients who make the best progress are the ones who are open to making changes. Partly that is building our counselling relationship each week, and partly it's doing the work in between sessions, to try out the things we've discussed.

How long does it go on for?

Everyone is different so I don't impose a specific timeframe for counselling. But it's important to review your progress regularly.

Often we'll have five sessions together and review our progress on the sixth week. This gives us time to celebrate how far you've come and plan our next steps.

How does it end?

A lot of people struggle with endings! In counselling, our hope is to achieve what we set out to do and we check on this in the review sessions.

Counselling ends with a final session to reflect on the progress we have made and recognise what you have achieved.

This doesn't mean it's finished! We can always book more sessions in together if we choose.
